Portinho da Arrabida: How to Get There
Portinho da Arrabida is the turquoise cove that shows up on every postcard of the Arrabida Natural Park: white sand, water the colour of a swimming pool, a small offshore fort, and the wooded slopes of the Serra da Arrabida rising straight behind it. The beach is the easy part. Getting to it is where most day trips go wrong, because for a big chunk of the year you cannot simply drive down and park.
This is the access guide, not another beach round-up. It covers the summer car ban, the shuttle that replaces it, where you can still park, and how to reach Portinho da Arrabida from Lisbon without a car, so you spend the day on the sand instead of stuck at a road barrier.
- Where: Arrabida Natural Park, between Setubal and Sesimbra
- The catch: cars are restricted on the beach roads in summer
- Car ban 2026: 4 June to 15 September, daily 07:00 to 20:00
- How to arrive: shuttle bus, on foot from the car park, or water taxi
- From Lisbon: train to Setubal, then the beach shuttle
Why access to Portinho da Arrabida is the hard part
The road to Portinho da Arrabida is a narrow, steep lane that drops through a protected national park to a small beach with almost nowhere to leave a car. On a hot summer day, thousands of people want the same few hundred metres of sand. The result used to be gridlock, illegal parking and damage to the park.
So Setubal council brought in a seasonal scheme called Arrabida sem Carros, which means Arrabida without cars. In summer it closes the beach roads to private traffic and moves everyone onto shuttle buses. It is the single most important thing to understand before you set off, and the reason a little planning saves your whole day.

The 2026 car ban: what is restricted and when
For 2026 the scheme runs from 4 June to 15 September, every day from 07:00 to 20:00. Within those hours, private cars are kept off the access roads to the main Arrabida beaches, and the road down toward Portinho is closed as soon as the car park fills.
Outside those dates, roughly mid-September to early June, you can drive down and park as normal, though space is still tight on any sunny weekend. In peak summer, though, plan around the shuttle from the start. Check the current rules on the official Arrabida sem Carros page before you travel, as exact times can shift year to year.
How to get to Portinho da Arrabida without a car
This is the good news: you do not need a car at all, and in summer you are better off without one. From Lisbon, the route runs through Setubal, and from there a seasonal shuttle carries you to the beaches.
| Leg | How | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Lisbon to Setubal | Fertagus train | About 50 minutes, roughly 4 to 5 euros each way |
| Setubal to the beaches | Shuttle bus 4474 | Frequent in July and August, every 10 to 20 minutes |
| Creiro to Portinho | Shuttle 4477 | Links the Creiro car park to Portinho, Galapos and Galapinhos |
| Setubal to Portinho | Water taxi | The scenic option, arriving by sea |
The shuttles run on the Navegante travel card, the same one used across the Lisbon and Setubal region, so top it up once and it covers the train and the buses. The Fertagus train from Lisbon is comfortable and quick, and it drops you in Setubal ready for the beach shuttle.
Driving and parking: the Creiro car park
If you do drive, your target is the Creiro car park, the main paid lot that sits back from the beaches. In summer it is the gateway: leave the car there, then walk or take the short 4477 shuttle down to Portinho da Arrabida.
- Creiro car park: around 140 spaces, so it fills fast
- Cost: about 5 euros for arrivals from 07:00, and 3 euros from 13:00
- Free option: park free at the Azeitao monthly market ground and take the shuttle in
- Timing: to get a space in July or August, arrive before 08:00 or skip driving entirely
Portinho da Arrabida once you arrive
The effort is worth it. Portinho da Arrabida is a sheltered south-facing cove, so the water is calm and clear in a way the wild Atlantic beaches never are, and it warms enough for a proper swim. A small fort sits just offshore, and the white Convento da Arrabida looks down from the green slopes above.
It is small, though, and it fills. If Portinho is packed, the neighbouring beaches of Creiro, Galapos and Galapinhos share the same clear water along the same shuttle line. For how they compare, see our guide to the best beaches in Arrabida Natural Park, and for the wider trip, our Arrabida day trip guide.
When should you go?
June and September are the sweet spot: the water is warm, the light is good, and the crowds are thinner than the July and August peak. Weekdays beat weekends everywhere in Arrabida. If you want to drive right to the beach, come outside the 4 June to 15 September window, when the car ban lifts.
Whenever you come, start early. The beaches, the car park and the shuttles are all at their calmest in the morning, and Portinho is at its most beautiful before the midday crowd arrives. If you would rather not think about any of it, our wine and Arrabida tour with Francisco drives the whole coast for you and handles the access. It also pairs the park with a stop in nearby Sesimbra.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get to Portinho da Arrabida?
In summer you reach it by shuttle bus, because private cars are restricted on the beach roads. From Lisbon, take the Fertagus train to Setubal, then the beach shuttle. If you drive, park at the Creiro car park and take the short 4477 shuttle down. A water taxi from Setubal is a scenic alternative.
Can you drive to Portinho da Arrabida?
Not during the summer car ban, which in 2026 runs from 4 June to 15 September, daily 07:00 to 20:00. In those hours the beach roads close to private cars and you use the Creiro car park and shuttle. Outside that window you can drive down, though parking is still limited.
Is there parking at Portinho da Arrabida?
There is no real parking at the cove itself. The main lot is the Creiro car park, with around 140 spaces, costing about 5 euros from 07:00 and 3 euros from 13:00. It fills early in summer. You can also park free at the Azeitao monthly market ground and take the shuttle in.
When is Portinho da Arrabida car-free?
The Arrabida sem Carros scheme runs from 4 June to 15 September in 2026, every day from 07:00 to 20:00. During those hours private vehicles are kept off the access roads and the route to Portinho closes once the Creiro car park is full, so plan around the shuttle.
Can you swim at Portinho da Arrabida?
Yes. Unlike the wild Atlantic beaches near Lisbon, Portinho da Arrabida is a sheltered south-facing cove, so the water is calm, clear and warm enough for a proper swim. It is one of the best swimming beaches in the region, which is exactly why it gets so busy in summer.
How do you get to Portinho da Arrabida from Lisbon without a car?
Take the Fertagus train from Lisbon to Setubal, about 50 minutes and 4 to 5 euros each way, then the seasonal beach shuttle, bus 4474 and the 4477 to Portinho. Everything runs on the Navegante card. A water taxi from Setubal is a slower, scenic way to arrive by sea.
Plan the access, enjoy the cove
Portinho da Arrabida is one of the most beautiful beaches near Lisbon, and the only hard part is arriving. Get the summer car ban and the shuttle sorted before you leave, come early, and the turquoise cove is yours for the day.
